At first we laughed because the Japanese had lifeboats in case the island sank. Then we learned about the pain of "cutter races". At any moment, loudspeakers could announce a cutter race. Students would have to sprint back to their dorms to change into the appropriate uniform, then hop into the boats and race.

Ceramic roof tiles were melted like lava from the heat of the blast.

"Okonomiyaki". which was described by our Japanese running mates as "Cabbage Pancakes". It's a thin crepe layered with cabbage, noodles, meat (in this case, chicken), and a savory sauce all cooked on a grill. Don't question it, this was one of the most delicious dishes I have ever eaten.
